Midday Entree: Slow Cooker German-Style Pork Roast with Sauerkraut and Potatoes

The Music:
Symphony No. 3 in D minor by Anton Bruckner; Bavarian Radio Symphony, Eugen Jochum, conductor; Deutsche Grammophon 469810
The Recipe:
Remember that wine ad that vowed they would sell no wine before its time? Well, Anton Bruckner is one of those composers who takes his time to say what he wants to say. So what better accompaniment than a good German slow-cooker recipe?
Says Diane,
"Pork loin becomes tender and delicious cooked slowly with sauerkraut and caraway seeds. This gets raves from my German father. My Irish husband loves it too!"
You can try it yourself by clicking here.

Midday Entree: Poulet Héroïque (Chicken Hero)

The Music:
Symphony No. 3 in E flat, Op. 55, "Eroica"
Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, David Zinman, conductor
Arte Nova 59214

The Recipe:
In looking for an appropriate hook for today's recipe, we thought (briefly) of Napoleons, but that didn't feel quite right. I mean, why bring it up?

So here's a simple but appealing (and "heroic") recipe for a chicken hero. The Bartlett pear slices add a nice touch of sweetness to this concoction, too.

Midday Entree: Burning Love Chocolate Cream Cake

The Music:
Harmoniemesse, Hob.XXII:14, by Franz Joseph Haydn
Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists,
John Eliot Gardiner, conductor
Philips 475 101

The Recipe:
I know what you're thinking. You're thinking what does a Burning Love Chocolate Cream Cake have to do with an Austrian composer's setting of the mass?

Well, aside from that never proven Elvis sighting in Salzburg, chocolate is a vital component in any number of Austrian baked delicacies, which is close enough for us.

This particular concoction is topped off with a lovely whipped cocoa cream frosting, which was literally the, uh, frosting on the cake (so to speak).

So get started on your hunka hunka Burning Love Cake by clicking here.

The Music:
Selections from Les fêtes d'Hébé, by Jean-Philippe Rameau
Ambrosian Singers; English Chamber Orchestra,
Raymond Leppard, conductor
EMI 565732

The Recipe:
Why serve cheesecake when you can have "Coeurs à la Crème?" Reminds me of some wag who commented that the French "have a different word for everything."

This is one of those recipes where a little extra fussing pays off in a very elegant individual dessert to cap off a fine meal.

Midday Entree: Quiche Lorraine

The Music:
Requiem, Op. 48, by Gabriel Faure
Kiri Te Kanawa, soprano; Sherrill Milnes, baritone;
Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Chorus,
Charles Dutoit, conductor
London 421 440

The Recipe:
So here's one of those recipes where, depending on your mood and level of expertise, you can experiment to suit your tastes (as well as what's on hand). It's also perfectly acceptable to use any number of shortcuts if the idea of making a pie pastry from scratch is just too formidable for the time being.

Most importantly, the result is an elegant offering to grace your table and amaze your guests.

Nobody has to know it was easy.

The Fair Margaret Anne

She was smart, funny, beautiful, talented and loved children, literature, art and music (among many, many other things). But what really set the Fair Margaret Anne apart from anyone else I've ever known was her unfailing ability to make whoever she was with feel like they were the most important person in the room.

Who could resist that?

Anne also loved to sing, and for the Midday Entree on today's Well-Tempered Wireless, we're presenting one of her favorites, Gabriel Faure's Requiem, a piece she had the opportunity to participate in a number of years ago, on a sun-kissed spring afternoon I'll never forget.

I hope you'll join us.
