In a Summer Garden (Still)

Despite signs to the contrary, summer is still with us, at least for a few more days. So when Frederick Delius' In a Summer Garden turned up on today's playlist, on a whim I asked you master gardeners out there to send along any photos showing off your labors.

Sure enough, within a few minutes, Mike Chiumento checked in with these JPEGs. Mike writes,

Attached are a few pictures of my garden (as you requested after the Delius). I live in a condo so I had to get permission to create a garden out in front. It is not very big but it is just enough for me to putter in and sit and enjoy in the morning (with a cup of coffee) and in the evening (with a good glass of wine!)

I have also included a picture of my cat, Gus. He loves the garden too and that is the first place he wants to go to the minute I am up in the morning.

Keep up the great music.

Well thanks, Mike; we'll do our best.

If you'd like to share the fruits of your gardening skills with us, please send your JPEGs to chris@dptv.org, and we'll post them here.

Sir James Galway Stops By This Month

One of the hottest crossover albums of 1975 was Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano, featuring Jeanne-Pierre Rampal. Now Sir James Galway has teamed up with the Grammy-nominated Cuban ensemble Tiempo Libre for their own take on Bolling's score in their latest CD, O'Reilly Street. You can see their YouTube video by clicking here.

Sir James will be making a guest appearance on The Well-Tempered Wireless Friday, September 26th to talk about O'Reilly Street. Meanwhile, here's the scoop from Sony:

Sony BMG Masterworks announces the first recording in a new, exclusive partnership with the world's leading flute player, Sir James Galway – O'Reilly Street, to be released on September 16 2008. The album reflects an exciting collaboration between Galway and the two-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group, Tiempo Libre.

Typical of Galway’s innovative approach to both his life and his career, O’Reilly Street has an unusual twist, as it features music from the Claude Bolling Jazz Suites with a dynamic Afro-Cuban beat. The recording includes Bolling’s “Baroque and Blue,” an exciting new arrangement of Bach's “Badinerie” as well as a number of vibrant new compositions by Tiempo Libre's musical director and pianist Jorge Gomez.

Commented Galway on this album: “I think this is one of the most outstanding recordings I’ve ever been involved in and I’m very excited about it. At my age to get to do this sort of thing is fantastic!”

Galway's appeal crosses all musical boundaries. He has recorded more than 60 albums which have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. As he approaches his 70th birthday, this dynamic new recording celebrates a new stage in his 50 year career.

Growing up, Tiempo Libre’s members were all classically trained in Cuba’s premiere conservatories. Now, as the first authentic all-Cuban timba band in the U.S.A, they are hailed as ambassadors for modern Cuban music and culture.

To put the Cuban connection into context, Galway – an avid history buff – had been fascinated to learn about a fellow Irishman, General O'Reilly. O’Reilly was a key military strategist in Cuba and has a street in Havana named after him, hence the title of the new album. Furthermore, many of the cities where Tiempo Libre’s members were born count the Irish among the original settlers in the 18th century.

Galway was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1979 and was knighted in 2001 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to music.
